GREENSBORO, N.C. — If you’ve spent time in the Greensboro area, chances are you’ve heard of Yum Yum Better Ice Cream.
It’s known to the locals as just “Yum Yum’s,” and the shop has been a staple in the community for more than a century. It draws visitors from across the state and country.
“I mean, I think it’s kinda iconic, you know, it’s the oldest restaurant in the county,” says William Lipp, the owner of Yum Yum Better Ice Cream.
Lipp bought the business about a year ago from the family who opened the original shop in 1906.
Lipp made it his mission to keep everything exactly the same, down to the one-of-a-kind pink hot dogs.
“There’s people that come in every single day,” Lipp says. “Six days a week for hot dogs and ice cream."
So whether you’re a regular, or an out of towner looking to try a classic, you can feel the history when you walk through the door.
“People like to tell us stories about the first time they came here at the old store in 1972, and it’s really fun to hear about,” Lipp adds.
The original owner used a push cart to sell his ice cream from 1906-1922, until the family moved into a brick and mortar location near UNC Greensboro.
It was there until 1974, when UNCG expanded its campus.
It’s been at its current location on Spring Garden Street in Greensboro since then.
One of our favorite parts of Eating N.C. is giving you a recipe that either comes directly from the restaurant or something very similar.
It’s hard to do that with Yum Yum Better Ice Cream because there are only two things on the menu: hot dogs and ice cream. Both recipes are well-kept secrets.
