CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Starting Friday, a lot more people could be allowed to attend school sporting events.
What You Need To Know
- During a press conference Wednesday, Gov. Roy Cooper eased up on several restrictions
- He removed the 100 person cap on outdoor events such as sports
- Now all events with spectators can have up to 30% capacity
Weddington High School parent Ann McLaughlin says Thursday afternoon was more than just a sunny day. It was the day she found out her whole family could potentially attend her son’s football games.
“It feels amazing to be back here,” McLaughlin says as she sat in the bleachers. “We didn’t have football in the fall, so it has been months since we have been able to see our kids play.”
The previous executive order would have only allowed 100 people to attend sporting games. On most football teams there are about 50 players, so this means one parent per team.
“When that order was in place it was heartbreaking,” McLaughlin says. “I have a senior in his last season and they could go to the state championship.”
The move comes after more than 46,000 people signed a petition, including parents and students, to increase spectators allowed at games. There was also a Senate bill to change the policy.
Weddington High School senior Evan Schwartz says his parents have done a lot to help him through his football career.
“All the work they have put in for me to get to this point, they deserve to see the outcome of it,” Schwartz says. “I am a reflection of everything they have done.”
Starting Friday, outdoor venues, bars, and businesses can have 30% capacity. Governor Cooper said social distancing will still be enforced, as well as the mask mandate.
“These proven safety protocols are vital as this virus is still here and infecting people every day,” Cooper said.
Weddington High School football stadium can hold 3,462 people, which means about 1,038 could potentially attend sporting events. The principal of Weddington High School says they are still figuring how many people they will allow so that spectators can social distance themselves.
Their first game is scheduled for Friday.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders released a statement saying 500 spectators will be allowed at sporting events. There will be 300 for the home team and 200 for visiting.
