FT. MEADE, Fla. - A volunteer Ft. Meade firefighter was hit by a train while fighting a grass fire.
Polk Fire Rescue says the fire started around 11:30 a.m Tuesday and spread to between three and four acres near 1491 14th Street West.
According to officials, at around 12:45 p.m., a CSX train was approaching the area, and an open door on one of the department's trucks was in its path. Officials say the firefighter ran over to shut the door but was hit by the train.
He suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital.
