HIGH POINT, N.C. — A North Carolina mother couldn’t find a place to play that would accommodate the needs of her autistic son, so she decided to build her own.

What You Need To Know

  • Q's Corner is a sensory-friendly indoor gym designed to accommodate children of all abilities.

  • Q's Corner is named after Quintin, a 9-year-old boy with autism.

  • Quintin's mother, Candace, designed the gym after struggling to find a place to play that could accommodate Quintin's needs.

Q’s Corner is an indoor play gym designed with kids of all abilities in mind, named after Candace Hayes’ 9-year-old son, Quintin. Hayes and her husband began creating the playscape over five years ago.

“Me and my husband put together a nice vision board of just nice equipment that’s accommodating for all kids,” says Hayes.

Q’s Corner features therapeutic swings, sensory lights, and virtual reality scapes. The gym is sensory friendly, providing a comforting place for children who process the world differently.

“Often times, you go to places and they have a handicap accessible ramp to get you in the building, but once you’re in there, there’s nothing for that child to do. We’re excited to have that parent and that child come in and have them navigate the facilities, and actually engage and play with other kids,” says Hayes.

Hayes hopes Q’s Corner creates an even playing field for every child. She wants children of all abilities to play beside each other.

“They’ll be able to come in and play alongside a kid in a wheelchair or a kid with autism, and they probably won’t even notice. That’s what we encourage and that’s what we’re looking for is inclusion,” she added.

Hayes and her team are sanitizing equipment around the clock to ensure safety. They ask parents to social distance and wear masks inside.

Q’s Corner will open on February 1, 2021 at 1800 N. Main St in High Point. For more information, click here
