RALEIGH, N.C. – America’s suburbs are always a toss-up come Election Day, but this time around, the suburban vote is what paved the way for President-elect Joe Biden.
This year, the country’s suburbs shifted from majority Republican in 2016 to majority Democrat in 2020.
One of those suburban voters who caused this shift is 68-year-old Jay Copan.
“In 2016 I voted for Donald Trump and in 2020 I proudly voted for Joe Biden. Joe Biden was the first Democrat I voted for in 40 years,” Copan says.
Copan says he decided to vote for Biden after disagreeing with President Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd.
He then posted a video on the site Republican Voters Against Trump, which was shared thousands of times.
“I haven’t gotten too many snarky comments, just a couple, but by and large it has been a lot of support for what I said, because a lot of people felt the same way that I did,” Copan says.
This year, large suburban areas registered a net Democratic advantage for the first time since 2008 when President Barack Obama ran for his first term
