CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nevins Community Center in Charlotte supports individuals with developmental disabilities.
COVID-19 closed the main community center in March. While some of their in-person services have resumed, they are still putting some of their courses online.
Pam Glass, Nevins' Director of Development & Strategic Partnerships, said they have gone from one online class a week to three, but not everyone has access to those courses.
Sarah Henderson teaches an online adaptive yoga class for Nevins every Tuesday.
“If their Wi-Fi isn’t great they can try to get on the call, but we end up dropping them out a lot,” Henderson said.
Tracey Suggs' daughter, Treana Suggs, has Down’s syndrome and uses her dad’s phone to participate in Henderson’s class.
“The biggest thing was to continue to have her involved at Nevins, continue to build the relationships she already has there,” Suggs said.
Nevins is committed to keeping their participants engaged, but they need help getting digital devices and strong Wi-Fi to those without access.
