HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- This weekend is National Video Game Day.
While it’s a favorite activity for adults and kids alike, a new business in Holly Springs is teaching kids in particular how to appreciate gaming even more.
Code Ninjas is a place for 7- to 14-year-olds to learn how to code by creating a video game. The kids receive a different color “belt,” much like in martial arts, and a bracelet for the different computer languages they master.
“The children are learning to code without even realizing it because they are so absorbed in trying to finish this game so they can play it,” said owner Eva Melamed.
A black bracelet is received once an app is created and sold on in the App Store.
“If these kids come up with the next emergency app that ends up shaving off time of EMT work, that’s theirs,” Melamed said. “ If they come up with the next Tic Tok, it is theirs. Hopefully the parents can retire and the kids will have money for the rest of their lives to do whatever they want.”
There are several Code Ninjas locations in North Carolina, with more in the works. A new location in Raleigh is slated for early next year.
