WENDELL, N.C. -- A community is coming together to stand up against a racist neighbor in their community.
About 30 signs line the street in a Wendell neighborhood saying "Love Thy Neighbor. Stop Racism". This came after one neighbor, who lives next door to the only Black family on the street, put up racist signs in his front yard.
The signs read, "Law and order matters not Black thugs," and "George Floyd is in Hell. Good riddens [riddance]. Thank you God!!"
"It was unreal that he had put that up," says Phyllis and Rudy Watson, who have been the only Black family in the community for over 20 years.
The Watsons said they are happy to see how the community is rallying around them, to continue to make them feel welcome.
"We saw all the signs, and we were just blown away because we didn't know that we would get so much support," says Rudy Watson.
Neighbor Lori Millberg ordered the signs and distributed them in the community.
"It could be a message, but a message of love," Millberg says. "There's also a message of love does not include racism."
Millberg called the Wake County Sheriff's office saying the signs in the yard are a threat. She said deputies came out and were understanding, but they could not force the neighbor to take the signs out his yard.
The Watsons and all neighbors we talked to say they plan to keep their signs up as long as the hateful ones remain.
