WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Wilmington Police say they are committed to working with community leaders to better relations.

Law enforcement agencies in New Hanover County lead a Peace March from Wilmington Police Headquarters to 1898 Memorial Park.

Linda Thompson, Wilmington Police public affairs officer, says Interim Chief Donny Williams was sick when he saw the video of George Floyd being killed by officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"This was a culmination of just - a point where enough is enough," Thompson says. "And, it's time for law enforcement to speak out and time to join the other voices and say, 'It's time to make a change.'"

Thompson says the department has already sat down with protest leaders and taken suggestions.

"We're taking those suggestions. We're doing the research," Thompson says.

The Wilmington Police Department just opened their new training facility in December 2019. Officials say the facility will be open to the public to come see how officers are trained, and to run through the same deescalation simulators as they do.

Thompson says the department welcomes any suggestions from the community on ways to improve.
