FORT MILL, S.C. -- In South Carolina, things are slowly starting to return to normal amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Gov. Henry McMaster announced Monday some non-essential businesses would be allowed to reopen. Places like clothing stores, jewelry stores, and some other retailers can now open with new restrictions.
According to the governor’s order, stores are only allowed to have five people per one thousand square feet of space, and social distancing is still encouraged.
In downtown Fort Mill, home goods store Crossings on Main, reopened for customers Tuesday.
Owner Cathie Smith says she’s only letting one customer in the store at a time if they make an appointment, and she’s still doing mostly virtual shopping visits with customers.
Smith says while it’s a temporary fix, she’s glad to once again be able to flip the “closed” sign to “open”.
“It’s still so cautious, and so its kind of like just the baby step before we really get to celebrate,” she says. “That’s what I’m looking forward to, and I think that probably won’t be until later in the summer.”
As of now, most of downtown Fort Mill is closed due to the stay-at-home order, since most of the businesses are restaurants and bars. Smith thinks it’s going to be a while before things return to normal, and the bustle returns to downtown.
