MADISON, N.C. -- The Mad Bean, a coffee shop and deli in Madison, is adapting to coronavirus restrictions by adding 'grocery store' to its business model.

The shop operates out of the historic Madison Grocery Building.

Owner Daniel Joyce says it was that history that inspired him to add the service.

One shopper says he loves what the new approach brings to the area.

"Knowing the history of the area and what all these stores have been, I'm saying it's a welcome change to get back a little mom and pop flavor," he said.

The shop now sells meat, eggs, bread, produce, canned goods, and toilet paper.

Joyce says he's determined to keep his business alive through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Mad Bean is still selling its coffee and deli items, but only for cubside pickup and delivery.
