CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This weekend is the North Carolina Golden Gloves Invitational.

Established in 1933, it’s the longest running sporting event in Charlotte.

Local Golden Gloves alumni include former president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway “Humpy” Wheeler.

The Belmont native won the Carolinas Golden Gloves as a teenager and is now in the Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame.

Wheeler says part of his upbringing that played a role in him becoming one of the most prolific promoters in NASCAR history was boxing.

“Confidence is so much in life,” Wheeler said. “And to win something like that when you're 16, 18, 19 years old, really gives you a lot of confidence that you can use in life right away.”

The North Carolina Golden Gloves Invitational is Saturday at 4 p.m. at Revolution Park Sports Academy in Charlotte.

Tickets are $5 for children, $10 for adults.
