RALEIGH, N.C. -- Elite AAU basketball coach Trevor Redfern knew from an early age that working with young adults was his calling.

“I went to a Catholic school and a priest, he actually prophesied, he said, 'When you get older you are going to be working with kids.' And to this day, man, I just had a passion for working with kids,” Redfern said.

In two years, Redfern has grown his basketball program, Cap City Clutch, from five teams to 13.

A newly-implemented study hall mandates his students work as hard in the classroom as they do on the court.

“If you have a C on your progress report, it is mandatory that you come to study hall," Redfern says. "It gives you some type of incentive. You can’t get out of study hall until you take your C to a B or an A.”

For Redfern, basketball is the vehicle he uses to help kids know that discipline and education will get you out of the stands of life, and onto the court where the real action begins.

“I’m planting the seed, providing that same outlet that I had for myself," said Redfern. "I want to pay it forward to others.”

The season starts in March and lasts until late summer.
