CHARLOTTE, N.C. --  An Uber driver is facing charges after a female passenger was ejected from a vehicle following a crash in east Charlotte Saturday afternoon.

Geoffrey Adams, who was driving a BMW, was traveling on East W.T. Harris Boulevard and crossed into the opposite lane.  He then ran off the road into the grass, hit a pole, and two trees. The car then reentered the road into the wrong lane before coming to a stop. It all happened at 1:30 p.m., according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers say the passenger, identified as 40-year-old Konjit Yohannes Frangulis, was found unresponsive in the road and was pronounced dead at the scene.  She was not wearing a seatbelt. Adams was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In North Carolina, all drivers and passengers 16 and older are required by law to wear their seatbelts.

Officers say his car had extensive front-end and driver’s side damage. He is charged with reckless driving and misdemeanor by death by vehicle.

Spectrum News reached out to Uber for a comment.

“Our hearts go out to the rider and her family. The driver has been banned from the app and Uber is cooperating in the police investigation,” a spokesperson from the company said.
