CHARLOTTE, N.C. — People living in decaying apartments in South End may finally see some relief.
- Residents at Brookhill Village have been complained about the crumbling affordable housing homes for years
- The new development would be called "New Brookhill"
- Will be a mixed market development with half the apartments being affordable housing and half being at market value
"I pay $625 plus utilities, so if you add everything up you are talking about $950, for a dump...the inside looks like the outside," Brookhill Village Resident Anita Younger said.
Residents at Brookhill Village have been complained about the crumbling affordable housing homes for years. It's why the non-profit South Tryon Community Development Corporation was put together. Rev. Ray McKinnon is the president of the group and says they are working with the developer to build new homes and demolish the old ones.
"It’s an attempt to ensure...the folks who currently live in Brookhill are center and are not forgotten," Rev. McKinnon said.
The new development would be called "New Brookhill." According to a press release, it will be a mixed market development. Half the apartments will be affordable housing and half will be at market value. Those who currently live at Brookhill will be given first priority and they will be able to live in their current homes until the new ones are built.
"There are multiple acres that are already cleared that will be the first phase," Rev. McKinnon said.
The second phase will be to demolish homes that are currently vacant and then continue on. The new complex is expected to have a community center, computer center, laundry facility, pool and recreation center. Younger says she just hopes it happens soon and everything works out as planned.
"I don’t want to spend my whole disability check on an apartment that isn’t updated," Younger said.
As far as a timeline on all of this, that is still unclear. Rev. McKinnon says they still have several steps to go through, such as securing financing and permits for the building.
