NORTH CAROLINA -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation says drones were a popular gift under the Christmas tree this year.
More than 30,000 people in the state now have personal drones.
The state says to make sure you:
- Always fly less than 400 feet above ground
- Do not fly above crowds or events
- Don't fly above people you are not with
- Don't fly near or above prisons
- Don't fly within five miles of an airport
- Don't fly at night
They also are encouraging new drone pilots to respect the privacy of others.
According to the NCDOT, breaking these rules could lead to an FAA violation, including jail time or a fee of up to $250,000.
If your drone weights 0.55 pounds or more, you have to register it with the FAA.
