CONCORD, N.C. -- A Concord woman has been collecting Santa Claus figurines for more than three decades.

  • A Concord family has collected more than 10,000 Santa figurines.
  • They've been collecting them since 1987.
  • The public is invited to tour the facility three days a year.

Judy Barnhart said it all started after she visited a shop in 1987.

"I did buy that one and painted it, bought three more, painted those. I began to give them as gifts and I guess you can say the obsession began then,” Barnhardt said.

Judy and her husband Ron now have 10,800 Santas, which they store in a shed behind their home they call ‘Santa’s House.’

Each year, she adds more Santas to her collection.

"My husband told me I couldn't buy another one but that's like telling me I can’t breathe,” Judy said. “The biggest thrill now is to find one we don’t have.”

Since 2013, Ron and Judy Barnhardt opened the display, which is located in a shed behind their home, to the public the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

"We are not obsessed with the Santas but if it can bring joy to some other family, then that's what it's all about,” Judy said.

People don’t have to pay to tour the display. However, the Barnhardt family accepts donations.

According to Judy, the money collected has allowed them to give close to $5,000 to Hospice & Pallative Care of Cabarrus County.

"Both of my parents were patients of Hospice and I'm a nurse. I had taken the best care of them I knew. But when it was time to go to the hospice house and I walked in there, the greatest gift they could give me was allow me to be a daughter. I didn't have to be a nurse anymore," Judy said.

The Barnhardt family also gave $500 to Meals and Wheels of Cabarrus County from donations last year.

"The biggest thrill of it all is after the first of the year, I take the money and give it to the two agencies, and to see their faces, no matter how small the contribution is, they're thrilled to have it,” Judy said.

Judy said she has seen the positive impact of the meals and visits for seniors in the community.

"That's why we chose Meals on Wheels also is to be able to give back and perhaps give a family meals that perhaps they would not be able to [have]," Judy said.

This year, Santa’s House has raised $400.

The display will be open for the last time this year on Saturday Dec. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1288 Irish Potato Road in Concord.
