BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. – Slow progress is being made as Boiling Spring Lakes tries to return to normal after Hurricane Florence destroyed four dams and damaged roads in the area in 2018.
- Boiling Springs Lake is still recovering from Hurricane Florence
- The roads are being rebuilt with FEMA money
- Design work is being done for the dams
FEMA money is being used to restore the roads that were washed out by flood waters.
“We’re wrapping up the small stuff, the dams are big,” Boiling Springs Lakes City Manager Jeff Repp said.
Design work is being done for the breached dams, which were almost 60 years old and built before the National Dam Safety Program, according to Repp. They will be rebuilt to code and expected to last 100 years.
“Most of our property owners have been very patient and understanding as we’ve gone through this process leading toward the reconstruction. We've gotten past the ‘will the dams be repaired?’ to ‘well, we know the dams are going to be repaired, and it’s just a time period to go through this process that we have to.’ "
Homeowners are waiting to have waterfront property again.
"I went out and looked in the back yard, there was no water in the back yard. I said, 'what the heck?' We came out and looked, and there was huge washed out dam at the end of the road," resident David Pearsall said.
