CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- On Sunday, volunteers made hundreds of sandwiches for people in need.
The sandwich drive is part of an initiative the Spoon family started in February called ‘Serving Spoons.’
According to Ashlie Spoon, it aims to make a difference in the community and allow her three children and others to give back.
“I hope we can teach our kids the importance of having a giving heart and the importance of giving back to others,” Ashlie said.
Arpita Byrnes who brought her young daughters to the drive also hopes to teach her girls the same lesson.
“I’m super excited that my kids can be involved in service projects because kids usually don’t get included in those and it’s very hard to incorporate children in that,” Byrnes said.
In an hour and nine minutes, the 32 volunteers who gathered at Bill Spoon's Barbecue made 945 sandwiches for homeless people in Charlotte.
With this being the fifth sandwich drive this year, Ashlie said they have it down to a science.
“They make the sandwiches, they bag them up and then we have one of the little kids run the sandwiches to a table where we hold the sandwiches,” Ashlie said.
Her 9-year-old son Steve said he likes helping others.
“It makes me feel fantastic,” Steve said.
Ashlie’s 7-year-old daughter Adelynn said she enjoys participating in the sandwich drives.
“They don’t have meals and that’s kind of bad and we like to help them and make sandwiches for them,” Adelynn said.
She anticipates in the future, she will continue giving back.
“It’s just a good thing to do so I’m definitely going to do it when I grow up,” Adelynn said.
On Monday morning, the Spoon family will deliver sandwiches to the Urban Ministry Center. The organization will give homeless people the sandwiches the volunteers prepared.
Serving Spoons also collected blankets for the homeless they will deliver on Monday.
