CHARLOTTE, NC -- Many people are wondering if it's safe to enjoy the Greenways in Charlotte after multiple assaults were reported this year. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department has stepped up patrols to try and re-assure runners and bikers.

The latest attack happened Sunday in the Mallard Creek area.

CMPD says people will see more officers on bikes and on foot patrolling the area. Officers from park services and UNC Charlotte also monitor some portions of the trails.

Officer Henry Chapman has been with CMPD's dual sport motorcycle unit for nine years, and says he knows what to look for when it comes to spotting a suspicious person.

"It could be the simple fact of being in an area where they're not supposed to be," he says. "If they're on the trail and they're coming out of a heavy wooded area, I would suspect that would be suspicious, and ask what was they doing back there."

Officer Chapman also suggests people workout with a friend, and try to avoid wearing headphones so you aren't distracted.

CMPD is still looking for help to solve Sunday's assault. If you have any information, you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
