JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. – The Kenly Police Department is under investigation by the SBI.

  • The SBI is investigating the Kenly Police Department.
  • The Kenly Police Chief and the Johnston County DA requested the investigation.
  • The reason for the investigation hasn't been released yet.

The bureau says the investigation began at the request of Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle and Kenly Police Chief Josh Gibson.

In a Facebook post, town councilman Trinity Henderson said the investigation refers to police making false reports and doing illegal searches.

Many people in the town say they're sticking by the officers' sides no matter what.

"I'm proud of them for wanting to prove their names right and showing that they're good at what they do. That's the best way to nip it in the bud is to start it and do it yourself before anybody can add a bunch of stuff to it," said Nancy Cates, who works in Kenly.

Spectrum News reached out to the SBI district attorney, town leaders, and police who wouldn't go on camera about the investigation.

Kenly is a town in Johnston and Wilson counties.
