CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It has been announced that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent Clayton Wilcox will resign effective August 2, 2019. This comes after Wilcox was suspended earlier this week.

Leading up to his August 2 exit, Wilcox will remain on suspension with pay, but will not receive any compensation in exchange for his resignation.

The board made a brief public statement before going into closed session Friday morning. Chairperson Mary McCray talked about the importance of due process for all CMS employees and the importance of keeping personnel records confidential. The board did not specify what was the cause for his resignation.

"This board will honor and protect each and every employee's legal right to privacy. We will do this even if means bad p.r. for the nine of us. We've been elected to accept bad b.r.," she said.

Wilcox has been with CMS for two years and the board has met twice this summer to discuss his performance.

Acting Superintendent Earnest Winston released a video to community members addressing the transition in leadership.
