FORT FISHER, N.C. – The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher closed unexpectedly Thursday due to a mechanical issue with their cooling system.

  • The aquarium at Fort Fisher is closed.
  • An issue with their cooling system is the cause.
  • They don't know when they'll be able to reopen.

The aquarium says they made the decision to close out of concern for visitor safety.

The aquarium will remain closed to the public Friday July 19. Aquarium staff identified a failed water circulation pump and the pump was removed. They have not yet gotten a replacement pump.

Officials say staff closely monitored habitats throughout the day and say all animals are safe and healthy.

“We are disappointed that we were unable to create meaningful experiences for thousands of guests but visitor well-being is a concern,” said Aquarium Director Hap Fatzinger. “It is also critical we do not elevate indoor temperatures with thousands of guests, which could put an undue strain on a system operating at a fraction of its capacity.”

The Aquarium has extensive safety protocols in place for emergency situations, and extended outages, similar to a hurricane.
