WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. -- The coast is returning to normal after Hurricane Florence one business at a time.
- The Oceanic in Wrightsville Beach has been closed since September and will finally reopen for business on Monday, April 22.
- Businesses still recovering from the storm include The Surf Suites Motel.
- The Blockade Runner opened their first phase of rooms Valentine's Day weekend, and Shell Island Resort is also fully open.
The Oceanic in Wrightsville Beach has been closed since September and will finally reopen for business on Monday, April 22. A hole blew into the roof during the storm causing the building to flood, and ruining all the interior.
"Being oceanfront, you take everything you can with it: the good, when it's a beautiful day and everyone wants to be outside; and the ugly, when it is miserable or a hurricane," said Catherine Goldfaden, LM Restaurants Director of Brands.
Goldfaden said The Oceanic averages about 100,000 customers annually, and employs over 150 employees.
"Not only are we a tax revenue generating restaurant, but we're an employer as well," said Goldfaden. "And to have employers closed because of the hurricane is not going to be good for a tourist town."
Businesses still recovering from the storm include The Surf Suites Motel, which is still closed and will start taking reservations in June. The Blockade Runner opened their first phase of rooms Valentine's Day weekend, and employees say the rest will come back online in May.
Shell Island Resort is fully open to customers, but it's still dealing with the over $1 million in damages that Florence caused.
Nonetheless, a business reopening is a win for the town.
The Oceanic will have the first floor and pier available to start, which is half of their tables. The restaurant plans to be able to open their second and third floor by May 17.
