The upcoming NXIVM trial could start later than expected, after the government requested the trial's start date of April 29 be delayed.
In a letter to the judge, the U.S. Attorney's office asks for opening statements to begin the second week of May. The government cites pending motions that could impact evidence as the reason for its request.
Defense attorneys for NXIVM co-founder Keith Raniere are objecting. Raniere faces a number of charges, including sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy.
Earlier this week, actress Allison Mack became the latest NXIVM member to plead guilty. Co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren both pleaded guilty last month for their roles in the group.
This leaves Raniere and co-defendants Kathy Russell and Clare Bronfman, who are set to go on trial at the end of the month.
If the judge agrees to delay its start date, the trial is expected to run through the end of June.
