GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- An eastern North Carolina barbecue restaurant has closed after being open for over half a century.

  • Wilber's Barbecue was an Eastern NC staple.
  • It first opened in 1962.
  • The state Department of Revenue says "they took action on the business."

According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue, "they took action on the business," which is located at 4172 U.S. Highway 70 East.

A sign outside of the property says: “Pursuant to NC G.S. 105-242(a)(2) the personal property here within has been seized for nonpayment of taxes.”

"Under state law, the Department of Revenue has the power to seize a business for nonpayment of taxes as a last resort after all other voluntary and forced tax collection measures have failed," the Department of Revenue tells Spectrum News.
