CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A old gold mine is turning into a money pit for one Charlotte homeowner.
Ashley Weidner says late last year, a support column in her basement fell into what she says is an abandoned underground mine shaft.
After having geology experts examine the hole, her insurance company rejected her claim.
And after spending thousands out of pocket to replace the support beam, she's sharing her story to let other homeowners know there could be something lying beneath the surface in their home.
“I think that the city needs to put together some kind of a research team or something to try to figure out where they are,” says Weidner. “Because I get it in 1933 when this was covered up, this current government wasn’t in charge and they didn’t have the technology that we have today. But we have the technology and Charlotte Citizens are going to be affected if things like this continue to happen so absolutely somebody needs to do something.”
Weidner says she's reached out to the city for help, but she says city officials told her since the hole is on private property they can't help her.
