WAKE COUNTY, N.C. – The parent of an elementary school student is speaking out after he says a substitute teacher told a music class a number of questionable things.

  • The parent of a Rand Road Elementary School student says a substitute teacher made disparaging comments about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • He alleges the teacher likened his son's athletic wear to prison attire.
  • The teacher has since resigned.

It happened February 8 at Rand Road Elementary School in Garner, North Carolina.

According to parent Billy Byrd, the teacher, who he identifies as Elizabeth Temple, told students that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. actually committed suicide, and his assassination was completely fabricated.

Additionally, Temple allegedly told a number of male students wearing athletic wear that they were wearing prison attire. A statement which Byrd, whose son is black, felt was racially motivated.

Byrd says Temple also made comments about President Trump.

In a statement from Wake County Schools, Timothy Simmons says:

“The school became aware of the students’ concerns Friday afternoon as classes were ending. The principal and staff talked with as many students as possible before the day ended. Based on those conversations, the substitute teacher was contacted over the weekend and immediately resigned. She is no longer eligible to teach in the district.”
