CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte man pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend in a car crash last year, and was sentenced Thursday morning.

  • Police say last February, Matthew Harvie hit two curbs and several trees, crashing his car.
  • The passenger in the car, Mary Brooks, died at the scene.
  • Harvie pleaded guilty to the charge of felony death by motor vehicle, and was sentenced to 120 days behind bars.

Police say last February, Matthew Harvie was driving on Runnymede Road near Barclay Downs Drive when he hit two curbs and several trees, crashing his car. The passenger in the car, Mary Brooks, died at the scene.

Thursday in court, Harvie pleaded guilty to the charge of felony death by motor vehicle, and was sentenced to 120 days behind bars.

The victim's family says the punishment isn't strict enough, and Brooks' 4-year-old daughter is hurting the most after the crash.

"She was everything you want in a best friend, and now none of us have her. And the price that you pay for that is 120 days in jail. 120 days is the punishment. That is not justice, it's not fair, and it has to be stopped," said Anne Elcess, Brooks' friend.

"When we ask Collette what she wanted to ask Santa for Christmas, she said I want to go be an angel with my mommy," said Brooks' dad in court.

As part of the plea agreement, Harvie will not be charged with DWI or reckless driving.
