MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Some people living near Lake Norman aren't in favor of the three options for removing coal ash from Duke Energy's Marshall Steam Station.

At a meeting on Thursday night, Duke Energy officials said all of the options are equally safe.

The options include:

  • Clearing the basin of water and capping the coal ash
  • Excavating some of the ash and capping the remainder
  • Or excavating the entire coal ash lagoon and moving it to a new lined landfill

With a show of hands during the meeting, citizens preferred the third option, excavating the entire coal ash site.

However, many of the citizens who showed up at the meeting, were not happy with any option.

“There’s a cancer cluster around Mooresville, there’s just some issues with the water. And I’m a homeowner in Lake Norman, and I just want to make sure that I have clean water,” said homeowner Alexandra Russell.

Three more meetings about other coal ash basins will be held across the state this month.

A decision will be made later this year.
