STATESVILLE, N.C. -- After three days of trial and three hours of jury deliberation, a verdict was reached in the case of a former Hickory police officer charged with use of excessive force.

  • 24-year-old Chelsea Doolittle was arrested at Union Square in Hickory
  • The defense argued that Robert George did not throw her to the ground
  • Sentencing will not be for a couple of weeks

Former Hickory police officer Robert George has been found guilty of use of excessive force and not guilty on knowingly falsifying a document of use of excessive force to deter an investigation.

The incident dates back to 2013 when 24-year-old Chelsea Doolittle was arrested at Union Square in Hickory for public intoxication. At the time, the officer called for backup to use a breathalyzer. The officer that answered the call was George. He then arrested her and put her in a patrol car.

There is surveillance video showing George approaching the police station, then there is footage of him getting out of the car and opening the car’s back door. The jury ruled that he threw her on the ground causing a broken nose, broken teeth, a concussion and PTSD.

The defense argued that George did not throw her to the ground, but that she fell.

Sentencing will not be for a couple of weeks.
