CONCORD, N.C. -- A woman in Concord is helping those in need with the help of the fire department.

  • Sheryl Kluge says she wanted to help those in need with a "blessing box"
  • It's a cabinet filled with food and hygiene items
  • She hopes to open four more throughout Cabarrus County

Sheryl Kluge says she's lived in Concord for nearly three years, and wanted to help those battling homelessness as well as those with financial burdens.

"I, as a working, single mom, did not qualify for assistance, and so there was that struggle. So, I know that's still true for so many today," she said.

She came up with the idea of a Blessing Box. It's a cabinet filled with food and hygiene items people could take as they needed. Kluge reached out to the fire department and now the box sits in the parking lot of Station 5.

"Often times people in need, they're embarrassed to ask for those needs," Chief Ray Allen with the fire department said. "This is something that possibly can meet their needs, and they'll be discrete as they do it."

Kluge says she hopes to open four more blessing boxes throughout Cabarrus County.
