GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- Recovering from Hurricane Florence is proving to be a long, arduous process, and now, communities across the state are dealing with a new problem -- getting swarmed by giant mosquitoes.

  • Mosquitos 20 times the size of normal ones, called gallinippers have appeared post-Florence.
  • They are aggressive and have a painful bite.
  • People do not contract Zika or West Nile virus from a gallinipper.

Called "gallinippers,” they are 20 times the size of mosquitoes you're used to and are aggressive and have a painful bite.

Gaston County Mosquito Control is studying the insect, whose eggs can live in dry land for a long period of time. It's during heavy rainfall that they start reproducing.

But they are more than just painful pests, unlike typical mosquitoes, people don't contract Zika or West Nile virus from a gallinipper.

The giant mosquitoes also eat the smaller species that can infect humans.
