CONCORD, N.C. -- Tens of thousands of fans packed the Charlotte Motor Speedway Sunday for the inaugural Bank of America Roval 400 race.

  • The speedway is one of the more challenging courses drivers will be facing
  • Many fans say they're hoping the race stays in the Carolinas to help attract a new fan base for the sport
  • It has not been announced if the Roval will return to the Charlotte Motor Speedway next season

The road course race is the first of its kind to be held at the speedway. This is one of the more challenging courses drivers will be facing, but that's what makes it so exciting for fans.

"Most of the road courses are either in Cedar's Point or Watkins Glen, so that's a long drive. We don't make it out to none of them. So we actually get to see one here, so it's neat. I like it," said Chris Efaw, a lifelong NASCAR fan.

Many fans say they're hoping the race stays in the Carolinas to help attract a new fan base for the sport.

“There needs to be something that’s going to draw the fans in a little bit more. The Roval at Charlotte, I feel like Charlotte really stepped up to the plate to do something like this," said Debbie Solanno. "The fans are excited, and I think the drivers are excited, and we're excited.”

It has not been announced if the Roval will return to the Charlotte Motor Speedway next season.
