FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – All eyes remain on the Cape Fear River after the now-massively flooded body of water crested overnight.
The river crested early Wednesday morning at 61.5 feet, just shy of the 62 feet estimate.
The rise has caused historic flooding, surpassing that of Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
The Clinton Road Bridge has shut down due to the flooding, but other bridges in the area remain open and are being carefully monitored.
Authorities in Fayetteville advised residents on Tuesday to “pick a side” of the Cape Fear River to plan on staying in until the flood waters go down.
The river is not expected to drop below flood-level until this weekend.
