CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte's Bojangles' Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium are getting a big makeover.
- The two venues will be connected
- Upgrades include more concession and restroom space
- Project expected to be completed by August 2019
A groundbreaking was held Tuesday morning for a new connector facility that will join the two venues. A number of city leaders were on hand to help turn the dirt.
The two buildings have hosted thousands of entertainment and sporting events since 1955. Mayor Vi Lyles says this project will ensure an exciting future for the auditorium-coliseum complex.
"This is a catalyst not just for the east side, but for all of our communities because this is an attraction where we are going to be able to entertain people who come from all over," the mayor said.
The project will provide more concession and restroom space for both venues as well as a multi-purpose event room. The work is expected to be complete next August.
