SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Salisbury Post, a paper circulating for more than 100 years, is switching from a daily newspaper to only printing a paper 5 days a week.

  • Management says it's due to the tariffs on aluminum
  • Paper costs are up 30 percent this year, aluminum is up 13 percent
  • Staff levels will remain the same

Management says it's due to the tariffs on aluminum.

Paper publisher Greg Anderson says since 2018 began, costs are up 30 percent, and the new tariffs against China have raised the cost of aluminum about 13 percent.

Without the aluminum plates, which Anderson says are only produced in China, they can't print the paper.

By switching to publishing 5 days a week from 7, Anderson hopes they will be able to continue to put out excellent content while balancing the rising costs.

"This is a move to strengthen us and position us for the future,” said Anderson. “And that’s why we didn’t lay off newsroom people. We want to continue to produce the same content and more now."

Anderson says they also plan on keeping the staff levels the same. He hopes the savings will give the company more room for capital improvements and raises for employees as well.
