Ross Cockrell was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Wednesday, a blow to a secondary group that was looking for some veteran stability at the position. The team now is focusing on rookie Donte Jackson and third-year player Kevon Seymour.
"Unfortunately, with the injury to Ross, it's kind of put it in both those guys laps," said coach Ron Rivera following Thursday morning's practice.
Lorenzo Doss, a third year player out of Tulane, continues to practice well, but Rivera is interested in seeing how Doss performs in game situations.
"We've got kind of an unknown guy in Lorenzo Doss who has practiced very, very nicely," said Rivera. "He picked it up right where he left off in OTA's and mini-camp, and in all honesty, reminds me a little of Josh Norman. You see him making plays happen, and you wonder what it's going to be like when there are consequences."
Those "consequences," Rivera refers to will come soon enough, as the Panthers open their preseason schedule on Aug. 9 when they travel to Buffalo to meet the Bills.
