WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Wake Forest opened their fall football camp Wednesday, marking the beginning of year number five under Dave Clawson.

  • Kendall Hinton will sit out three games on suspension
  • This is coach Dave Clawson's fifth year
  • Team will open their season Aug. 30

The Deacs come into this camp having won bowl games in consecutive seasons, however, they are a preseason pick to finish sixth in the seven-team Atlantic Division of the ACC.

Quarterback play could be a reason for the low ranking as the Deacs will open the campaign with projected starter Kendall Hinton sitting out on a three-game suspension for violating team rules.  This leaves a pair of understudies battling for the starting job in week one.

Redshirt sophomore Jamie Newman and freshman Sam Hartman are looked at as the potential fill-ins for Hinton during his suspension, but Clawson feels that both players may see some time under center.

"We're just gonna flood them with reps," Clawson told reporters following Wednesday's opening practice.  "Jamie is now in his third year, and Sam was here all spring.  So, [we'll] just load them up with reps and see how they do and. You know, they may both have to play."

Wake Forest will open their season Aug. 30, when they travel to New Orleans to face Tulane.
