NORTH CAROLINA -- With a total of 5.09 inches of rain recorded at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and one more day of July to go, we’re a good amount above normal in terms of rainfall so far for the month (over one and half inches above average, to be more precise).

  • The Climate Prediction Center puts western North Carolina into about a 30 to 40 percent chance of above average rainfall for the first couple of weeks into August.
  • It does appear that the second part of August may make a return to warmer conditions.
  • However, expected precipitation remains to be uncertain.

The majority of the rain has come just within the past nine days and it appears as though the wet weather trend will continue into August as well.

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) puts western North Carolina into about a 30 to 40 percent chance of receiving above average rainfall for roughly the first couple of weeks into August.

In conjunction with that and likely owning to the fact that we’ll see more cloud cover along with the rain, temperatures have the same chance of being below average. That's good news for a time of year where temperatures, climatologically speaking, tend to be the some of the hottest of the year.

The weather pattern setting up for the first day of August is somewhat unusual for this late in the summer season. The jet stream is expected to take a deep dive to the south and remain that way for a few days as a “blocking” area of high pressure off the East Coast prevents the pattern from changing too much.

A deep, southwesterly, moist flow will then set up over the Carolinas and transport plenty of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward, leading to the potential for heavy rain.

It does appear that the second part of August may make a return to warmer conditions, as the CPC gives about a 30 to 40 percent chance for above average temperatures for the month as a whole. However, expected precipitation remains to be uncertain, as it is given an equal chance of both above and below average rainfall.
