CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Concord Fire Department is advising parents about fireworks that closely resemble cartoon characters. They recently found dragon and unicorn figurines during their inspections of fireworks tents across the city.

  • While the dragon can be sold, the unicorn is considered illegal in North Carolina due to a projectile
  • CFD is concerned that kids might mistake the fireworks for toys
  • Concord Fire will continue spot checks on vendors through the Fourth of July

While the dragon can be sold, the unicorn is considered illegal in North Carolina due to a projectile. One vendor voluntarily removed the unicorn before they even started sales.

“Of course we complied,” explained Anthony Smith. “The last thing I want on my conscience is to hear that some parent maybe wasn’t thinking and something were to happen.”

CFD is still concerned, though, that kids might mistake the fireworks for toys.

“Discouraging that manufacturers are making these fireworks look like toys. In no way, shape, or form are these toys. They should not be left in anyone's hand unless they are an adult and they should only be used by adults,” said CFD's Adam Ryerson.

Concord Fire will continue spot checks on vendors through the Fourth of July.
