CONCORD, N.C. -- The fate of a Cabarrus County elementary school has been decided by school board officials. The board has voted to vacate the school in 2020.

  • Beverly Hills Elementary to vacate June 2020
  • School opened in the 1950s
  • Parents say the district has plans to bus students to another school

Parents have been going back and forth with the district for months, emailing and sharing their concerns at public meetings. They have stressed they don’t want their tight-knit neighborhood school to close.

The district says the school is too old and too costly to maintain, but parents aren't buying it. They think the district wants to close Beverly Hills, so they can bus those students to Royal Oaks, a new school that needs to be filled up.

One mother says it's a place her daughter thrives in due to the small school feel.

“It’s more intimate. My daughter knows everybody in the school, every teacher, every administrator, the janitor staff, they’re all awesome and we know every single one of them, and we can go in the school and speak. It’s like one big family,” Heather Nimer said.

Beverly Hills Elementary opened in the 1950s. The changes could take effect in June 2020.
