CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- A Cabarrus County Elementary school could be shut down, and parents are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen.

  • The board says the building is too old and needs to be torn down
  • This decision would force students to new schools, and would put several teachers out of work
  • There is a public hearing Monday night to discuss if the Board of Education should close the school

The Cabarrus County Board of Education wants to close Beverly Hills Elementary School, despite strong resistance from parents and the community.

The board says the building is too old and needs to be torn down. This decision would force students to new schools, and would put several teachers out of work.

Lee Shueman has several children that attend Beverly Hills Elementary, and he says it's been hard fighting to keep the school open. However, he says it's been even harder telling his kids they may have to switch schools.

"For them to think that they're gonna have to go to another school, or that we may have to move in order to make things more convenient for us as a family is a tough thing to have to explain to very small children, who don't understand the reasons behind it," Shueman says.

There is a public hearing Monday night to discuss if the Board of Education should close the school. The board will not make a decision, but members will be there to listen to parent's concerns.
