MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- People living in an area prone to flooding are closely watching the main channel of the Catawba River.
- Catawba basin got more than 4 inches of rain
- Experts don't expect Lake Norman, Lake Wylie or Mountain Island Like to spill over
- However, those listed lakes are at capacity
Sandwiched between several large lakes, heavy rainfall in the past has caused water levels to inch closer to neighbor's back doors.
Duke Energy officials are closely watching neighborhoods like the one along Riverside Drive. It is a flood prone plain and homes are backed up right to the river's edge. Both Lake Norman, which is at full PND, and Mountain Island Lake, which is nearly full, are above this community.
Since last week, through the use of 11 dams, Duke Energy has been working to move water between 13 overfilled reservoirs along the Catawba basin which has seen roughly 4-plus inches of rain.
Managers who run Duke Energy's hydro system don't expect Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, or Mountain Island Lake to spill over, even though they are at capacity.
Several of the residents say they feel Duke Energy has done a good job with this latest rain event.
