CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A popular Charlotte church is dealing with some email hackers. They got a hold of the St. Gabriel's Catholic Church mailing list and created a fake account for its priest to ask for money.

The National Council on Aging says the elderly population should watch out for being asked to wire money, put it on a gift card and more. It's how Linda Sarber's mother, and several other parisihoners got hooked.

The email asking folks to buy iTunes gift cards for fake Father Frank O'Rourke's sick friend in the hospital but wouldn't specify an amount.

Another woman spending hundreds of dollars after she says the scammers asked to have a picture sent to them of the card with the activation code scratched off.

Sarber's mom only figured it out when she called Father O'Rourke who told her he never sent such an email.

"I think it’s very disappointing to know that somebody would take a priest and try to use their identity to scam people," she said.

No word on how many other people fell victim, or who's behind it all. The church is now asking anyone who got it to delete the email as soon as possible.
