North Carolina is facing some of the highest concentrations of tree pollen in the U.S.

This season's pollen count is much higher than previous years. And the allergies pollen causes, if untreated, can turn into serious problems.

“[It] can get infected and lead to sinus infections and ear infections and other problems over time,” Novant Health Medical Director Dr. Charles Bregier said.

Experts say the unusually high pollen count is likely caused by a long winter, and could be extended because of a dry spring.
