CHARLOTTE -- Former Carolina Panthers player Rae Carruth will be released from prison in a few months.

Carruth was convicted in 2001 of conspiracy to murder his girlfriend,  24-year-old Cherica Adams.

Adams was pregnant at the time she was shot, and her son Chancellor was born with cerebral palsy.

Carruth sent a 15 page letter addressed to Adams' mother to our news partner, WBTV.

In it, he took responsibility for what happened.

Carrruth said he wants his son to be a part of his life, and that, after his release in October, he plans to go back to California to live a private life.
