CHARLOTTE -- Three private sector investors have expressed serious interest in redeveloping the former Eastland Mall site.
Charlotte City staff couldn't share any specific plans but they say all are mixed used developments with three possible themes: an urbanist concept, amateur sports facilities and a health and wellness concept.
“We're going to do our homework, we're going to make sure we vet all the projects, do our due diligence,” said Councilman James Mitchell.
Longtime East Charlotte Resident Carolyn Millen said she's heard this all before.
“We've been promised so much we've finally taken the rose colored glasses off and we're saying we want to see action, we want to see results, positive results,” said Millen.
Affordable housing is a big push for council and it’s something that could be incorporated into these plans. But district representative Dimple Ajmera said that shouldn't be the focus of this development.
"What East Charlotte truly needs is economic opportunities that create jobs and catalyst for East Charlotte,” said Ajmera.
Staff says they’ll make a recommendation to council in next January.
Last year, the city sold a portion of the land to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for a new K-8 magnet school. The school should be open by next August.
