CHARLOTTE -- Drone use is taking off in the Tar Heel State.

NCDOT hosted a Drone Workshop, Thursday, on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

Officials spoke with commercial and government drone users.

Many want to see regulations on unmanned aircrafts catch up to the technology in the industry.

“In europe they're about 10 years ahead of us in application of drone technology,” Bretten Smith of Charlotte UAV said. “Our regulations have really limited us in terms of application of drone technology. So right now they're collecting the data, they're trying to find the safest way to implement drones. And that just is a slow pace."

This was the first of a series of Drone Workshops by NCDOT.

The next is August 31 in Asheville.
