CHARLOTTE -- Charter Communications is helping its technicians further their careers thanks to its apprenticeship program.
The largest in North Carolina, the program provides students a state and national certification while also helping veterans take advantage of their GI Bill.
"They're the ones that come to your house and knock on your door. They're the ones that install your cable,” said Chris Cullen, Technical Training for Business Class services manager.
Thanks to the company's apprenticeship program, these technicians are earning their state and national broadband certification.
"It’s an awesome thing for your resume. It’s something that can't be taken away. For the employer, [if] we get a more high skilled technician, it brings value to the organizaion,” said Cullen.
The North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, John E. Skvarla, toured the Charlotte training facility Monday.
"The apprenticeship program has doubled in North Carolina each in the last 2 years, so we're on a very robust growth curve, Charter has been one of those leaders in the development in the apprentice program and we want to highlight our leaders,” said Skvarla.
Business Class broadband technician Devin Steward said he only knew the basics 10 years ago.
"It could change your life, change your career, help you advance and learn another skill basis you that thought you could never learn,” said Steward.
Veterans can also recieve their GI bbll payments through the 4 year program.
"If I didn't have the program, I would have survived, but I probably would have lost my house,” said Steward.
Charter Communications is the parent company of Time Warner Cable News.
